If you follow this blog or have visited our website, you’ll know that TYGES has five core values that guide our organization. So far I’ve given some thoughts on respect, determination, and courage. This week I am focusing on INTEGRITY.
TYGES defines integrity in this way: “We are honest and ethical in our interactions; no exceptions.”
As I thought about how this plays out in the actions of each member here at TYGES, the first thing I thought of is my colleague Robert Meeker. At least once a week I will hear him explain the importance of something as simple as calling a candidate/client at the agreed upon time: “Here at TYGES we do exactly what we say we are going to do – it’s our core value.”
“We do exactly what we say we are going to do.”
We realize that integrity goes hand-in-hand with trust. We are dealing with professionals who trust TYGES with the future of their business and their career. We respect the organizations and individuals we work with enough to understand that we cannot violate that trust by falling through on our agreements. In the end, TYGES will honor the agreements we have with those in relationship with us, and we expect our partners to do the same.
But standing in integrity is sometimes met with pushback.
As I think back, I can remember times when I’ve had to stand by my own core values even when I felt alone in it. What’s worked for me is taking a moment to pause and assess the situation from more of a bird’s eye view. I identify what is being challenged and then envision possible consequences of my decision to either stick with or compromise my value. Methodically walking through this helps me assure myself that I have reasons for my decisions. And when I have a reason for it, I can have peace with it.
Integrity extends to your job search as well. Too often candidates feel forced to compromise their values in their job search out of desperation to land a job. If you look back at TYGES’ definition of integrity, you see two words: honest and ethical. You owe it to yourself to look within and be honest with yourself about what you need to be whole in your next role. No matter the pressure you get from the outside, stay true to yourself and fight to stand by what you believe.
At the end of the day, standing in integrity can be painful. But personally, I have found that choosing integrity despite pushback has only ever made me stronger and has led me to my own perfect job.
