Most likely we’ve all heard the song Gravity by John Mayer, and the line where it says, “Gravity…it’s working against me.”
In this time of fear and uncertainty, I choose Gratitude and have my own line – “Gratitude…it’s working for me.”
With all the fear coming out of mainstream media about the virus, the impact on our economy and ultimately the impact on us personally, I choose to start each and every day in prayer & meditation. In this quiet time, I typically start it out with all the things that I am grateful for and never want to take for granted.
Some of them are extremely basic like the ability to get out of bed, a meal, a roof over my head, etc. Why do I start here? Because I never want to forget that while there are struggles in today’s world, I’m fortunate that my basic necessities are met. From there, I’m grateful for my loving wife, my beautiful 14-year-old daughter, and my wonderful 10-year-old son. Yes, with being out of school, they are home a lot right now and get under our skin. But what I’ve come to realize is how much I enjoy the laughter when we are around each other and how much love is in my family. During this time, instead of rushing to get them back into school, I catch myself smiling and appreciating the quality time we have together.
There are many other things/people that I’m extremely grateful for including my extended family members and friends who live all over the world. They are wrestling with the same challenges. I’m grateful for my TYGES family and appreciate them more than I can articulate. There is no group of people that I’d rather be with during this time as we work to bring “normalcy” back to the world. I’m grateful for all the friends I’ve met over the years as we lean on each other in person, over the phone, via text, or in prayer.
During this time, I have more time to think which can be both good and bad. But one takeaway is that I’m doing my best not to take anyone for granted and appreciate all who have been put in my path. I am grateful for this time to slow down and prioritize my family and create memories that I will cherish for the rest of my life.
In this time of uncertainty & fear, join me in starting your day by choosing gratitude and letting it work for you. Look around and appreciate this time. Look for ways to help others. Look for ways to encourage others. Look for ways to be grateful and go one step further and express this gratitude. Appreciate how hard everyone is working to get past this difficult time. Avoid the media, avoid politics, and avoid those with a negative outlook.
Focus on being a bridge-builder and bringing us together. Look for the positives and be grateful. Rest, relax, re-connect, and reflect on the many great things that have and will continue to occur. Call someone you love and tell them how grateful you are for them.
I choose gratitude.
