As I’ve shared in recent articles, TYGES has a set of five core values, and I am working to explain each over the next few months. Last month we discussed Respect. Today DETERMINATION is up!
On our website, TYGES defines determination as it relates to our company: “We stay the course to achieve our goals regardless of the obstacles.”
I can think of specific ways each member of TYGES has shown determination in the past two years that I have been part of the team. On numerous occasions, I have seen my coworkers work late into the evening or come in on the weekends to meet their goals.
Every job has its ups and downs. One month you can be making steady headway toward your quarterly goal, and the next month find yourself doubting if you will meet the mark after all. It takes a certain determined mindset to push past the self-doubt that can creep up and press on no matter how the month has gone.
I know the job search can be just as unpredictable, so I wanted to provide some tips that I have found helpful in my own life. Maybe one or two may resonate with you.
Your past does not determine your future
It can be easy to look at all the applications that go unanswered or all the interviews that did not go as you hoped and believe that you will never reach your goals. But that just isn’t the case. If anything, it’s the opposite. It only takes one ‘yes’ to turn things around — what are all the no’s before that? Instead of looking at disappointing patterns and believing that is all your future has in store, absorb the let-downs, do what you can to learn from them, and then set your mind on what is in front of you.
Make a clear plan
If you feel like you need a quick cry, that’s cool. Let yourself feel those emotions. Just don’t stay there. At the end of the day, the reality is that there are things you need to do in order to achieve your goals, and you need to keep pushing until you get there.
When I feel I have hit a wall, I usually like to pause and ask myself a few questions so I can make a plan that is so clear I can follow it no matter how I feel. The key is to be as concrete as possible. I might write down specific answers to these questions:
-What is my goal?
-What exactly needs to happen for me to get there?
And then I go more detailed and more detailed until I have a few next steps right in front of me waiting for me to get started.
